Rumors of My Relationship with Russell Crowe Have Been Greatly Exaggerated

While I’m confessing all of my secrets, I figured I might as well come out of the closet about this Russell Crowe thing, too.

About a week ago, I posted a status update on Facebook, saying that Russell Crowe had just sent me a friend request. I wasn’t sure whether I should accept, though.

For one, I wasn’t sure the friendship request was really from Russell. I have a long and sordid relationship with various celebrities on Facebook. You can read more about that here. It occurred to me that some 18-year-old troll might be trying to get his jollies off, tricking me into thinking that the real Russell wanted to be my friend.

My Facebook friends, however, accused me of being insecure. They told me that, of course, Russell knew who I was. Of course, he read my blog. Of course he wanted to be my Facebook friend. Why wouldn’t he?

One friend wrote:

I think sometimes we don’t know how to accept success when it hits us over the head. Maybe we aren’t Hemmingway or Ansel Adams, but you are a success. Accept and enjoy.

Another told me succinctly: Alisa – you’re a rock star!

So, feeling self-important and downright Famous By Association, I decided to accept Russell’s gesture of friendship. I clicked through to the friendship request. It was then that I noticed something I had not noticed before.

It was not a friendship request. It was a friend suggestion.

Russell didn’t want to be my friend. Someone else–no doubt someone who’d read my blog post about friending celebrities–thought I’d want to be friends with Russell.

This wee little mistake of mine? It embarrasses me. I almost didn’t tell anyone about it, for fear that you would all laugh at me and tell me that I should have known better.

Should I have kept it a secret?
